Mapping in/for I’ll Samba Someplace Else (Forthcoming, Duke UP, 2026)

My first book, I’ll Samba Someplace Else: A Spatial History of Race, Ethnicity, and Displacement in São Paulo, will be published with Duke UP in 2026 in print and open access formats. Over the last few months I have been re/creating maps for the book with ArcGIS Pro. Find a sample of the maps below.

A center for samba in São Paulo, the Largo da Banana was demolished in the 1960s for the construction of a new avenue.

Some of São Paulo’s chief current arteries were built upon preexisting indigenous routes.

The Brasilândia neighborhood was once a hub for enslaved and freed people of African descent in São Paulo.
São Paulo’s newest metro line, connecting Bela Vista and Brasilândia, has resurfaced patterns of racialized demolition and displacement from earlier generations of infrastructure projects in São Paulo.
