The RemediesAR

The RemediesAR project centers on the creation of an augmented reality (AR) memorial to São Paulo’s former Church of the Remedies, the headquarters of Brazil’s Underground Railroad in the 1880s and a museum dedicated to the enslaved from 1888 through the building’s demolition in 1942. A collective of artists, musicians, scholars, activists, and developers in Brazil and the U.S. is co-creating the narrative content, visual and sonic design, and user experience of the memorial through devising, a creative process in theater wherein the script is produced collectively through collaboration and improvisation. At the same time, the Remedies collective is investigating how cutting-edge uses of location-based AR (LBAR) can advance reparative racial justice in former slave societies like Brazil and the United States.

Ideation and prototyping support provided by the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and UNC School of the Arts Office of the Provost.
